Stress is a normal part of living. It can spur us to do great things or manage problems. However, it is important to have recovery times in between times of hard work and stress. Taking time to recharge your batteries, relax and recover is an essential part of self care.
Taking time to relax and manage stress takes your body out of a chronic stress state. Stress causes a “fight or flight response” which keeps your body prepared for danger. This is good when you want to be heightened in handling stressful situations or danger but extended periods of time in this state can be harmful to the body and mind.
WAYS TO RECOVER FROM A HECTIC OR STRESSFUL WEEK
SPEND TIME IN NATURE
This is a wonderful way to calm the body and mind down. Nature seems to have a calming effect. Taking a walk
DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT
Using a different part of your brain can help balance and replenish you. If you work with numbers spending time doing crafts or coloring can be just the thing to relax you and have fun. If you are an artist then playing tennis or a game of chess may help pull you out of your comfort zone and work different parts of your brain.
SPEND TIME WITH LOVED ONES OR A PET
Pets are good for reducing stress. Studies show that petting your dog or cat for 15 minutes can reduce your stress. Spending time with friends and loved ones can also lower your cortisol in your body.
SPEND TIME ALONE
If your week was spent interacting with a lot of people, you may need some quiet time with yourself to rest and relax. Introverts in particular find time alone very recharging.
RELAX AND DON’T FEEL GUILTY
When you’ve had a particularly hard week your body and mind are due some relaxation. Putting your feet up is nothing to feel guilty about. Find your best way to relax. Do you like sitting poolside with people around, reading in nature under a tree, or being cozy at home in your recliner with your pets sleeping next to you?
GETTING SOME EXERCISE
Taking a walk, playing tennis or bike ride can release stress from the body. Exercise gives you endorphins and improves your mood. Choosing exercise that is fun for you is an added bonus.
BE A COUCH POTATO
Once in awhile it is okay to stay in your pajamas, catch up on your favorite TV shows and treat yourself to some comfort food. Watching mindless shows can give your brain the break it needs. In moderation, this splurge can be perfectly healthy way to recover from a bit of stress.
TALK TO SOMEONE
It helps to unload your burdens by talking to someone you can trust. Talking to a friend or family member can be helpful. You can also talk to a professional counselor or a leader in your clergy. The important thing is that you are talking to someone who you feel safe talking to so that it does not add stress.
